Subject: License change possible?

Hi, Recently there has been talk about securing the CPAN toolchain and adding an OpenSSL binding (not OpenSSL itself) to the Perl core. Sadly the Net::SSLeay license is incompatible with the Perl license. Is there any chance of a license change to GPL and/or Artistic? -- sebastian

Hello Sebastian, I dont have a problem in principle with a license change, but there are probably legal and ethical issue to understand: The code is based on the SSLeay API, and that may be relevant, maybe not. The code was originally written by Sampo Kellomaki, and I am just the maintainer. I suspect that Sampo should be consulted too. Cheers. (I replied this to MikeM in private mail, but perhaps it belongs better here.) For simplicity I had originally stated OpenSSL license, but I think changing this to Perl Artistic License or Apache2 License would be OK. The connection to OpenSSL is at linkage level so license can be different (this is also mentioned in the COPYRIGHT section of pod). I am opposed to GPL or LGPL. Given the contribution over the years, I would be willing to vouch that everybody would be happy with Artistic or Apache2. If needed, I am willing to put the license change in writing and submit it to Perl managing entity (foundation?), but with IANAL disclamer. Please Cc me (and ask others to Cc me) in any further discussions about changing the license terms. Cheers, --Sampo sampo-netssleay@zxid.org

I'm really pleased to hear about this. TLS in core would be a huge win for Perl. Show quoted text

I understand that opposition. Nevertheless, would you be amenable to "the term of Perl itself", meaning Artistic *or* GPL? That would be the most natural thing for something bundled with Perl. If not, I think Artistic is going to be a better choice for the Perl core. (Even though I prefer Apache2 for my non-core projects).

Hello David, Thanks for that. Sampo, how do feel about Davids suggestion? I am completely neutral, and defer to your views. Cheers. On Thursday, August 07, 2014 10:46:30 PM you wrote: Show quoted text
