Subject: CPAN should handle missing gzip more gracefully

From: Marc Lehmann <schmorp@schmorp.de>
I was building a perl 5.8.9 under a limited environment using -Dextras, and cpan failed in a weird way: ftp://ftp.perl.org/pub/CPAN/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz Going to read /root/.cpan/sources/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz sh: -q: invalid option Usage: sh [GNU long option] [option] ... sh [GNU long option] [option] script-file ... ... Warning: Your /root/.cpan/sources/modules/02packages.details.txt.gz does not contain a Line-Count header. Please check the validity of the index file by comparing it to more than one CPAN mirror. I'll continue but problems seem likely to happen. Warning: Your /root/.cpan/sources/modules/02packages.details.txt.gz does not contain a Last-Updated header. Please check the validity of the index file by comparing it to more than one CPAN mirror. I'll continue but problems seem likely to happen. .Could not split line[«IhÄÈõP] Could not split line[y5çãÇ(ú:ÞËdJÈ¿¡NRói"ÜeÔ=ªCÂÁBRçlb¢§æ4vIy"i¦$B0ä!4l4ÎÆDB¹+bÂh/´Ù^³gMæ¦] Could not split line[ Ru¥sDòèW²â¤2</·r¤ÑæÞFñ"¹@s#²'ÅwÿÑÑWi]Ê ¢)NbztÀïd¹-ºÍêt,²t£ü¼TÄ*¤9k'³·°Ð] Could not split line[»±¦k5{M¹õªbùA)>út¬ñx úiÉ"àw$ü«¶Yµ iÚÚ6»µ_b¨FkRÖ6 tÐz/u¢Ùp|ØÆv&´èõ=©m"%«¢YK,IgU4ÒÉúÖ)A+¢æFï~ËÎyÚn;óÝ:=¿m°¬¶Ý?´¤4Êhxõæ3] Could not split line[ÎUÑhR¶jhnAV^[UÑæÞúOßHU´§m¤i\SOº>z½¨Í\ûÐ:] Could not split line[ýdÙÒ|×!P×e(KuZü6ü®SeÅ"HH(Ê~ëá@o<µh%©à6ûäõÅá2RßÃÙÑ] Could not split line[Y-F÷ªzJÈ0äfÒ>÷¤2Óûul1å!æ$4ø ºöãU·<°]8âé«äÌ] Could not split line[çÄk(ù®mpwÑ gìöA ×`rüo2þ`!å=PÝïýØ÷YF¦ø©Øb0(º¼¼F3Àr1î@ù°øXaÛìïw7P®l¥~2xYöç¾ߛ'0¤;P0Æ"\ÛðQsfâ}áHtU>`¯DäUuA1XJóz,d@R®!q¶çÞ)*Be"ëÙø"¡Áa¬^íèe°µÍ{A¬u哉ø¤b{] Could not split line[5÷QÎm ]b¹3vØQnóSG)Ê;ë.&ÁL)oý@ÌÄkQbÑúîE6XËNjúêÄú¨çÖ[sá_²<E:Iýn}M÷}äSãzNR¨ozÖï^zêî] Could not split line[\TÛé<¼î3îðò® 玱gÎÚrUcåèñ2ð3%ÜîuU] Could not split line[.HÍÉz1ÉÄìÌÃØïW\¬7îL{*à>¤Ð×d 6ÐÑXÃqtw#õ`¿À] ^]¯ld no¦ÁNhõ:¤]line[ES£7Xí²ùü¤Z`ÐZP`bFA¡û]²O8P×´¡[´:> Could not split line[ ·Z>VV¿0×À0ÞWy+3d+] Eventually, it apparently output some temrinal reset sequence, so I couldn't even see what's going on. I dont know what exactly caused it, but my guess is that it's caused by gzip not being found (which is indeed missing). It would be nice it cpan handled this more gracefully (but of course not required). Or maybe CPAN does handle it fine already (perl 5.8.9 is pretty ancient, but the last perl that successfully builds statically). -- The choice of a Deliantra, the free code+content MORPG -----==- _GNU_ http://www.deliantra.net ----==-- _ generation ---==---(_)__ __ ____ __ Marc Lehmann --==---/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / schmorp@schmorp.de -=====/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
Thanks, Marc, this looks like a great bordercase I probably never thought of. I'll try to track/fix it.
Fixed in 1.94_63. Thanks for the report
