Subject: 'unknown software exception' while installing Strawberry 5.12.2 on Win7

When installing the Strawberry Beta MSI for 5.12.2 from this link: http://strawberryperl.com/download/5.12.2.0/strawberry-perl-5.12.2.0.msi I have one "Software Exception" issue occurring on my Windows 7 machine. Apart from this, Strawberry seems to work just fine. When I remove and re-install the software, I get the same exception. Screenshot attached.

I couldn't duplicate this. Maybe you two can help me fix this for the next release (which should be in a month, hopefully) Start a command prompt and run: cd Desktop msiexec /i strawberry-perl-5.12.2.0.msi /l*vx spinstall.log Then zip up the spinstall.log and send it to me. Maybe then, I can tell where this is happening. Best I can do at the moment.

Hi Curtis, Zipped log attached ('spinstall.zip'). I don't know about what should be expected to find in here. The error DID occur again while reinstalling but the only error I can find in the log is about the README file. The popup appeared just before the installer said "creating shortcuts" or similar. -- Mike Show quoted text

I downloaded and installed strawberry-perl-5.12.2.0. After some time I got the error message "The Windows installer has encountered a problem and must be terminated" (message translated back to English by me). I choose not to send an error report to Microsoft. To my surprise the installation continued to completion. It seemed that the installation was ok (I only tried "perl -v", and it worked). The next day I deinstalled Strawberry Perl and started a new installation. Very soon I got the error "The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2908." Klicking OK brought up the same error immediately. There was no way to escape from this loop and cancel the installation. So I killed the task "Strawberry Perl Setup" via the Task Manager. The process msiexec.exe showed high CPU usage for a good while, then I got the same error message as the day before. I followed the instructions in the Release Notes and produced the attached log file. I have Windows XP Home with SP3. This was my first experience with Strawberry Perl. I have installed "perl, v5.10.1 built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread" from ActiveState, and good luck it's still there. In my notes I have some more details about my installation of Strawberry Perl (including the differences between the two days), and I could repeat the installation to take some screenshots. So please inform me if you are interested. Kind regards Klaus Wittrock

I got the same exception error when installing the 64-bit MSI on Win7 Pro 64-bit, although Strawberry worked fine in the end.

---------------------------
Windows - Application Error

The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occurred in the application at location 0x001d47fd.

The only thing that didn't work fine was that parameters are not passed to scripts when they are invoked standalone (foo.pl vs. `perl foo.pl`), even though I did run:

C:\>assoc .pl
.pl=Perl

C:\>ftype Perl
Perl="C:\strawberry\perl\bin\perl.exe" "%1" %*

Update:

Got a "msiexec" error when installing http://www.strawberryperl.com/download/5.12.2.0/strawberry-perl-5.12.2.0.msi on Windows XP SP3. Strawberry works fine, with the same caveat above (which is detailed in RT #66039.

Hi, I want to start using Strawberry Pearl, downloaded it to my * HP Compaq nx9420 with Windows 7 Enterprise * Lenovo L512 with Windows 7 Professional With BOTH computer, I run the MSI for Strawberry Perl 5.12.2.0 (latest). I get the following error on _both_bachines: The exception unknown software exception (oxc000000d) occurred in The application at location 0x100040b0. Click on OK to terminate the program The installation seems fine then... That means I could run some PERL scripts I found on the web. I don't have the expertise yet to see if Functionality is lacking. Though I think the installer should not be ended in this way.. [cid:image001.png@01CC0444.2FBCA080] BTW I tried to deinstall the package, reboot the laptop and reinstall, but problem persists and reproducable. Hi Neil, thanks for the report. The issue you're reporting is in fact a duplicate of this one: https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=62853 and it's fixed in the 5.12.3 installer which is still in beta. It's caused by the fact that the README file was missing, the installer can't copy the README to the target location because of this. It does NOT impact StrawberryPerl. -- Mike

This should be resolved with the release candidate for Strawberry Perl 5.12.3.0 - links to it are at http://csjewell.dreamwidth.org/19249.html. Please check and see if this is still a problem!

Thank you for the information. But sorry, still bad news from the installation: I downloaded the final version directly from Strawberry's home page. Near the end of the installation I got the error message "The installer has encountered an unexpected error ..." (see the attached screenshot). The status message hidden by the error window was "Updating component registration". Klicking on the OK button brought back the error window immediately. I had to use the Task manager to terminate the program. I can start Strawberry Perl. "perl -v" gives "This is perl 5, version 12, subversion 3 (v5.12.3) built for MSWin32-x86-multi-thread ...". However, I cannot use ppm: U:\Klaus\Perl>E:\Programme\Perl\perl\bin\ppm.pl Can't locate PPM.pm in @INC (@INC contains: E:/Programme/ActivePerl/site/lib E:/Programme/ActivePerl/lib .) at E:\Programme\Perl\perl\bin\ppm.pl line 8. My Path variable looks correct to me: U:\Klaus\Perl>echo %path% E:\Programme\Perl\c\bin;E:\Programme\Perl\perl\site\bin; E:\Programme\Perl\perl\bin;C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS; C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem; C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Ulead Systems\MPEG; C:\PROGRA~1\GEMEIN~1\SONICS~1\; C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Ulead Systems\DVD So the only explanation that I have for the nonsense in @INC is that ppm's @INC was hardcoded during installation, taking the then present value of Path. Hopefully you have a better explanation. The default @INC is ok: E:\Programme\Perl\perl\bin\perl -e "print qq(@INC\n)" gives E:/Programme/Perl/perl/site/lib E:/Programme/Perl/perl/vendor/lib E:/Programme/Perl/perl/lib . I will repeat the installation. Now that Path is current from the beginning there is some chance that all goes well. I will inform you on the outcome. By the way: I use Windows XP with SP3. Kind regards Klaus

Hello Curtis, yesterday I failed to notice that there might be another explanation for the faulty @INC in ppm: the Windows Registry. It has several entries that contain the string ActivePerl. Today I renamed the installation folder, then repeated the installation. I got the same error as yesterday, the only difference being that there is no new installation folder. Kind regards Klaus
Is this still a problem with strawberry perl 5.14.2.1 ?

Good news: My reported problem has gone with the new version 5.14.2.1 . Bad news: While starting to use Strawberry Perl, I soon encountered a new problem. I entered the command cpan Tcl The installation failed. I am attaching a log file to this email. In this logfile you will find the message "Der Befehl "tclsh" ist entweder falsch ...". This translates to "The command "tclsh" is eiher misspelled or couldn't be found". The same happens when trying "cpan Tkx", and it happens also with Strawberry Perl Portable Edition, versions 5.14.2.1 and 5.12.3.0. I need Tkx for my current project. I am using Windows XP with SP3. I am only a simple user of Perl, so I had no idea how to install a patch. Good luck I got the following recipe from the forum www.perl-community.de: --------------------------------------------------------- cpan aufrufen Show quoted text
cpan> look Tcl
C:\strawberry\cpan\build\Tcl...> move C:\TEMP\strawberry-perl.patch . C:\strawberry\cpan\build\Tcl...> patch < strawberry-perl.patch C:\strawberry\cpan\build\Tcl...> perl Makefile.pl C:\strawberry\cpan\build\Tcl...> dmake C:\strawberry\cpan\build\Tcl...> dmake test C:\strawberry\cpan\build\Tcl...> dmake install C:\strawberry\cpan\build\Tcl...> exit Show quoted text
cpan> q
--------------------------------------------------------- While executing "patch < strawberry-perl.patch", i got the following error: patching file Makefile.PL Hunk #1 succeeded at 196 (offset 14 lines). Hunk #2 FAILED at 264. 1 out of 2 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file Makefile.PL.rej Nevertheless I continued with "perl Makefile.pl" and got this error: Der Befehl "tclsh" ist entweder falsch geschrieben oder konnte nicht gefunden werden. (Translated: The command "tclsh" is either misspelled or couldn't be found) This is exactly the same message that I got when I originally tried to install Tcl (see my previous email). I will include the log file of my attempt to install the patch, and also the file Makefile.PL.rej. Maybe this can help to find out what went wrong. I believe chances are good that the problem is not in the patch, instead there is an error in the recipe above. I hope you will have an opportunity to get this checked. Kind regards Klaus

This was the decisive hint. I still got the message "Hunk #2 FAILED at 264.", however the patch got installed. Then I was able to install Tkx, and my 1st Perl/Tkx script runs. Thank you very much for your kind help and your patience. Kind regards Klaus
