Subject: Segfault when used with Scope::Upper
Download (untitled) / with headers
text/plain 3.4k
When using Scope::Upper's unwind under profiling, my application dumps core. This doesn't happen without profiling (it behaves correctly). Unfortunatelly, i can't provide short and simple example (it happens only in real world, short apps works OK), only stacktrace in attachment. Algorythm i use is like: 1. save current scope pointer (HERE) 2. do { call->call->call->call->unwind saved scope } 3. unwind to saved scope (here it segfaults) My enviroment is: % perl -e 'use Scope::Upper; print $Scope::Upper::VERSION' 0.09 % perl -e 'use Devel::NYTProf; print $Devel::NYTProf::VERSION' 2.10 % perl -V Summary of my perl5 (revision 5 version 8 subversion 8) configuration: Platform: osname=freebsd, osvers=7.0-release, archname=i386-freebsd-64int uname='freebsd begom.com 7.0-release freebsd 7.0-release #1: tue feb 10 11:29:32 msk 2009 inferno@begom.com:usrobjusrsrcrelease-7.0sysbegom i386 ' config_args='-sde -Dprefix=/usr/local -Darchlib=/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/mach -Dprivlib=/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8 -Dman3dir=/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/perl/man/man3 -Dman1dir=/usr/local/man/man1 -Dsitearch=/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/mach -Dsitelib=/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 -Dscriptdir=/usr/local/bin -Dsiteman3dir=/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/man/man3 -Dsiteman1dir=/usr/local/man/man1 -Ui_malloc -Ui_iconv -Uinstallusrbinperl -Dcc=cc -Duseshrplib -Dccflags=-DAPPLLIB_EXP="/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/BSDPAN" -Doptimize=-g -ggdb -DDEBUGGING -Ud_dosuid -Ui_gdbm -Dusethreads=n -Dusemymalloc=y -Duse64bitint' hint=recommended, useposix=true, d_sigaction=define usethreads=undef use5005threads=undef useithreads=undef usemultiplicity=undef useperlio=define d_sfio=undef uselargefiles=define usesocks=undef use64bitint=define use64bitall=undef uselongdouble=undef usemymalloc=y, bincompat5005=undef Compiler: cc='cc', ccflags ='-DAPPLLIB_EXP="/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/BSDPAN" -DHAS_FPSETMASK -DHAS_FLOATINGPOINT_H -DDEBUGGING -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe -Wdeclaration-after-statement -I/usr/local/include', optimize='-g -ggdb', cppflags='-DAPPLLIB_EXP="/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/BSDPAN" -DHAS_FPSETMASK -DHAS_FLOATINGPOINT_H -DDEBUGGING -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe -Wdeclaration-after-statement -I/usr/local/include' ccversion='', gccversion='4.2.1 20070719 [FreeBSD]', gccosandvers='' intsize=4, longsize=4, ptrsize=4, doublesize=8, byteorder=12345678 d_longlong=define, longlongsize=8, d_longdbl=define, longdblsize=12 ivtype='long long', ivsize=8, nvtype='double', nvsize=8, Off_t='off_t', lseeksize=8 alignbytes=4, prototype=define Linker and Libraries: ld='cc', ldflags =' -Wl,-E -L/usr/local/lib' libpth=/usr/lib /usr/local/lib libs=-lm -lcrypt -lutil perllibs=-lm -lcrypt -lutil libc=, so=so, useshrplib=true, libperl=libperl.so gnulibc_version='' Dynamic Linking: dlsrc=dl_dlopen.xs, dlext=so, d_dlsymun=undef, ccdlflags=' -Wl,-R/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/mach/CORE' cccdlflags='-DPIC -fPIC', lddlflags='-shared -L/usr/local/lib' Characteristics of this binary (from libperl): Compile-time options: DEBUGGING MYMALLOC PERL_MALLOC_WRAP USE_64_BIT_INT USE_LARGE_FILES USE_PERLIO Locally applied patches: defined-or Built under freebsd Compiled at May 27 2009 07:15:34 @INC: /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/BSDPAN /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/mach /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8/mach /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.8 .

Realistically I'm going to need a small test case. Try running the Scope::Upper test suite with these env vars set: PERL5OPTS=-d:NYTProf NYTPROF=file=/tmp/nytprof.out:addpid=1 (meanwhile I'll mark this ticket as stalled) Good luck!

Another issue (not segfault, but still stops program execution): #!/usr/bin/perl use strict; use Scope::Upper qw(unwind HERE); my $scope; sub z{ unwind(2, $scope); print "not reached\n"; } sub x{ $scope = HERE; z(); } print 1; print x(); print 3; Without debug, it prints '123' as expected. But under -d:NYTProf it complains about Can't use string ("2") as a subroutine ref while "strict refs" in use at test13.pl line 7. Probably, this is source for segfaulting in complex cases.

No great progress yet, but I can give you a partial workaround: NTPROF=subs=0:leave=0 That disables the subroutine profiler and the special handling of leave operations. Realistically I'm not going to have much time to dig into this without help from someone who knows how the internals of Scope::Upper work.

subs=0:leave=0 helps, but, sadly, i'm interested in subs time only. Leave=0 without subs=0 segfaults everything immidiatelly - they must be used together only? Not mentioned in docs. I'd be happy measuring only subs time, without statements and related. Can you point out what parts of NYTProf are used in hooking pp_leave/pp_entersub? As i have 2 choices - try to fix or maintain 2 code versions, with and without unwind() calls.

subs=0 turns off the subroutine profiler (leaving the statement profiler running) and leave=0 disables part of the statement profiler. Show quoted text

If I need to point them out then you're unlikely to be able to make much use of the information. http://code.google.com/p/perl-devel-nytprof/source/browse/trunk/NYTProf.xs pp_leave isn't hooked when leave=0 is used, so you can ignore that. Show quoted text

Or use the subroutine timings generated by the statement profiler. Look in the file listing on the main index page of the report and you'll see a column that has links for "line . block . subs". Click on subs. It's basic but still useful. Or use another profiler. Tim.
Please retry. I think this is fixed in the repository now.
Now I come to actually test it I see it still has problems. Reopened.
Fixed, finally! Try with r908
