Hi Doug, when working on the Debian package for Audio::CD a question about the licensing came up. It is related to the version 0.05, which was downloaded from the disc-cover homepage [0]; CPAN only has 0.04 (which doesn't contain any license statement at all, AFAICS). In the 0.05 tarball both README and CD.{xs,pm} say: Copyright (C) 1999-2002 by Doug MacEachern When included as part of the Standard Version of Perl or as part of its complete documentation whether printed or otherwise, this work may be distributed only under the terms of Perl's Artistic License as included in the file COPYING. Any distribution of this file or derivatives thereof outside of that package requires that special arrangements be made with copyright holder. These conditions unfortunately don't conform with the Debian Free Software Guidelines, as they seem to interdict the distribution of the module on its own for Debian and the distribution of derived works by our users. At the end of the day we'd probably have to remove the package from Debian (currently it's installed on 423 machines according to [1] and it's needed by disc-cover and yaret). Cf. also the thread starting at http://lists.debian.org/debian-perl/2008/09/msg00006.html and the bug report in the Debian bug tracker at http://bugs.debian.org/497694 I sincerely hope we can find a solution that allows us to keep the module in Debian. It would help us if you could re-license the module under a free license ("under the same terms as Perl itself" or similar) and upload a version 0.06 to CPAN. -- Of course we will also accept any other decision from your side! Thanks in advance, gregor (Debian Perl Group) [0] http://www.vanhemert.co.uk/disc-cover.html or http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=134116&package_id=147167&release_id=426539 [1] http://qa.debian.org/popcon.php?package=audio-cd -- .''`. http://info.comodo.priv.at/ | gpg key ID: 0x00F3CFE4 : :' : debian gnu/linux user, admin & developer - http://www.debian.org/ `. `' member of https://www.vibe.at/ | how to reply: http://got.to/quote/ `- NP: Aimee Mann: That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart
