I saw this in the test results for 1.03, and added the library versions to the test to confirm that your Cairo was older than 1.10.0 (September 2010), which is when recording surfaces were added. Since I use them extensively, I added a version check to the test script, and mentioned it in the README. I'll change the version check to BAIL_OUT of the test script, so it doesn't bother trying to load the module.
