Subject: Test::Smoke fails to identify failing tests in web report; does not smoke the branch requested
I'm trying to understand why a particular smoke-test report I generated is defective in several respects. The report in question is: http://perl5.test-smoke.org/report/68028 You'll note the following: * The report is for branch 'blead'. * The report was graded 'F' on 3 of the 8 configurations. * No specific test failures are reported. When I go to the machine where the smoke-test was run, I see that it was the most recent run on that machine: ##### $ cd logs/smokecurrent $ ls -ltr . | tail -4 -rw-rw-rw- 1 jkeenan jkeenan 1453 Jul 24 23:22 rpt065c341a5cb198ae9b03f6aa4a3c778976f87a6b.rpt -rw-rw-rw- 1 jkeenan jkeenan 2372 Jul 24 23:22 out065c341a5cb198ae9b03f6aa4a3c778976f87a6b.out -rw-rw-rw- 1 jkeenan jkeenan 578044 Jul 24 23:22 log065c341a5cb198ae9b03f6aa4a3c778976f87a6b.log -rw-rw-rw- 1 jkeenan jkeenan 6472 Jul 24 23:22 jsn065c341a5cb198ae9b03f6aa4a3c778976f87a6b.jsn ##### Problem 1 When I look at the 'rpt' file (attached), I see that, unlike report 68028, it does describe failures in specific tests: ##### Testsuite was run only with 'harness' Tests skipped on user request: # One test name on a line Failures: (common-args) none [stdio] -Duseithreads [stdio/perlio] -DDEBUGGING -Duseithreads ../dist/Time-HiRes/t/itimer.t...............................?????? ##### ../dist/Time-HiRes/t/itimer.t is also reported as '??????' in the 'out' file as well (which I can provide upon request). Why did this failure not make it to the test-smoke.org web page? Problem 2 For this smoke-test run I did not request 'blead' as the branch to be smoked. Rather, I requested 'smoke-me/jkeenan/133382-Test-Simple-trial'. ##### $ head smokecurrent.gitbranch smoke-me/jkeenan/133382-Test-Simple-trial blead smoke-me/jkeenan/davem/133377-time-hires blead ##### If I call 'git status' in the two directories that are repositories, I get two different results: ##### $ cd git-perl && git status On branch smoke-me/jkeenan/133382-Test-Simple-trial Your branch is up-to-date with 'origin/smoke-me/jkeenan/133382-Test-Simple-trial'. nothing to commit, working directory clean ##### $ cd ../perl-current/ && git status On branch blead Your branch is ahead of 'origin/blead' by 39 commits. Here is another instance of what I described as "Problem 1" in this ticket, viz., data present in the files on disk being stripped out in the web page. The web report in question is: http://perl5.test-smoke.org/report/68549 I am attaching the 'rpt' file from that smoke-test run. If I am interpreting the data in 'rpt' correctly, I see that: * There were 8 runs in total: 2 x 2 x 2: (with/without threads) x (with/without DEBUGGING) x (perlio/stdio). * In 5 of the 8 runs, lib/File/Copy.t was the sole test with failures. ##### [stdio/perlio] -Dusequadmath [stdio] -DDEBUGGING -Dusequadmath [stdio/perlio] -Duseithreads -Dusequadmath ../lib/File/Copy.t..........................................FAILED 53 Non-zero exit status: 1 ##### * In the other 3 or the 8 runs, lib/File/Copy.t failed, but dist/Time-HiRes/itimer.t had what in the log file is classified as a "weird" result. ##### [perlio] -DDEBUGGING -Dusequadmath [stdio/perlio] -DDEBUGGING -Duseithreads -Dusequadmath ../dist/Time-HiRes/t/itimer.t...............................?????? ../lib/File/Copy.t..........................................FAILED 53 Non-zero exit status: 1 ##### However, when I go to the web page at the link cited above, *no* information on the dist/Time-HiRes/t/itimer.t failures is displayed. ##### http://perl5.test-smoke.org/report/68549 Test failures: ~~ ../lib/File/Copy.t .......................................... And now one additional data point for Problem 1. I smoke-tested the same commit as the previous post (e94c3f6a) on the same machine, only this time without -Dusequadmath: http://perl5.test-smoke.org/report/68572 That web page lists failures ('F') in 3 or the 8 runs -- but gives no information as to what actually failed. If I go to the corresponding 'rpt' file, I see this data which is not found in the web display: ##### Locally applied patches: SMOKEe94c3f6a8d515b39961010524037ca044f029524 Testsuite was run only with 'harness' Tests skipped on user request: # One test name on a line Failures: (common-args) none [perlio] -Duseithreads [stdio/perlio] -DDEBUGGING -Duseithreads ../dist/Time-HiRes/t/itimer.t...............................?????? ##### So the data on the web page excludes important data available in the 'rpt' file.

I've come to learn that it's the 'jsn' files that are sent to the CoreSmokeDB. I'm attaching the 'jsn' files for the 2 smoke test runs previously reported. They demonstrate that the '../dist/Time-HiRes/t/itimer.t...............................??????' data is available in the .jsn files, from which I infer that it is the code generating the HTML for pages such as http://perl5.test-smoke.org/report/68572 that is at issue. Thank you very much. Jim Keenan
